The Warner Brothers Game announced a reorganisation, and the focus of the future will be on Harry Potter, the Game of Power, the Play of Truth, and the Four Series of the DC cosmos. According to a well-known source, SEScoops, Sony is assessing the possibility of acquiring part of the assets of Warner Bros. Discovery, known as the WBD, with the aim of targeting its flowing media platforms and related intellectual property rights, rather than the company as a whole.
It was noted that Sony ‘ s interest was focused on the new WBD subsidiary WBD Streading and Studios, which was to be dismantled in 2026, which covered the HBO Max, TV theatre and film-making sectors, as well as the well-known IP players, including the DC cosmos, Harry Potter and the Game of Power. If the deal is made, it is expected to be announced in 2027 at the earliest, when the global multimedia landscape will be reshaped.
According to the reorganization plan published just before the Warner Brothers Games, the WBD is expected to split into two entities in 2026. WBD Global Networks, which focuses on traditional cable television operations such as CNN, TNT, etc., but with a $37 billion debt and a significant loss of subscriptions; and WBD Steaming and Productions, which includes streaming media and production assets with high-value IPs.
It goes without saying that Sony is clearly more interested in the latter, and the analysis suggests that its acquisition is premised on a cable television operation that divests assets of debt. This is in line with Sony ‘ s recent strategic configuration, which has demonstrated its ambition to create a multimedia empire through the acquisition of games such as Bungie. If Warner’s top IPs are successfully integrated, Sony’s competition in the areas of film, television and games will increase significantly, especially in the current media competition with Netflix, Disney+.
At present, however, SEScoops reports have not been officially confirmed and the market response is more based on speculation. Moreover, the Warner Brothers Game Department has performed poorly in recent years, with the loss of projects such as Suicide Team: Kill the Justice Coalition, the closure of Monolith’s studio and the cancellation of Wonder Woman’s game, revealing its operational challenges. Nevertheless, the long-term value of IPs such as DC, Harry Potter and others remains attractive, and Sony has unlocked its potential through restructuring.
It is worth mentioning that the history of Sony ‘ s cooperation with the Warner brothers adds credibility to the rumour. The two sides planned to build a film studio in Las Vegas, which, although not passed on 3 June, showed a strategic convergence between the two sides. If the acquisition is to take place, Sony will have to face financial problems, such as consolidation costs and debt allocation, while ensuring that assets such as HBO Max remain growing in a highly competitive market for the media.
